Early Autumn Green Smoothie Detox

Drinking this cucumber / celery / spinach green smoothie twice a day for a few days is a great way to detox after Labor Day, which seems to signal, (along with fresh snow on the summit of Pikes Peak that another year end is coming and we need to be ready.

Green smoothies are packed full of nutrition that helps detoxify our livers, kidneys and bloodstream, as well as reducing inflammation and helping to rehydrate our bodies. They also restore our body’s natural pH level, which is critical for optimal immune system reactions, particularly with this year's unusually high ragweed count, and an already predicted particularly bad upcoming cold and flu season. 

Recent research indicates that increasing global temperatures and carbon dioxide levels are causing longer ragweed seasons and more concentrated pollen counts, says the American Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. 

For those of you who have yet to develop a taste for green smoothies without a lot of fruit to make them sweet, if possible, hold the fruit to one half cup mixed dark berries, or one half cup fresh pineapple, or a small apple to keep the sugar content as low as possible. 


It takes more time for some people to develop a taste for smoothies and foods with less sugar content, but keep trying, it's important for optimal health.

Suggested Ingredients


1 handful of spinach

1/2 lemon, peeled

1 inch piece of fresh ginger

1/3 cucumber

1/2 celery stalk

1 small handful of cilantro

1 small handful of parsley

1 cup of water, or more 

Optional fruit


Peel the fresh ginger
Peel the lemon
Blend the mixture in powerful mixer and drink immediately

Health Benefits of Ingredients


Parsley, Cucumber and Celery are diuretics and stimulate kidney activity to flush out toxins. The chlorophyll found in parsley is terrific for blood purification by removing heavy metals.

Cilantro is also an effective method to remove heavy metals from our bodies. Heavy metals are found everywhere – they’re in pesticides and herbicides used to grow our food, in our water sources and everyday products such as shampoo and deodorant. More and more studies are finding that heavy metals are a contributing source of disease and other health issues.

Lemons are great for restoring the natural pH balance in your body. Every day we consume food that is very acidic including wheat, sugar and meat. Adding lemons (and other greens) to your diet will help stabilize your pH level resulting in a stronger immune system.

Ginger reduces inflammation, helps balance blood sugar, and has been shown to be effective at fighting symptoms caused by a head cold or the flu. It also helps digestion and can calm an upset stomach.

Spinach is one of the ultimate super foods. It’s inexpensive, readily available and low in calories, high in chlorophyll, loaded with vitamins and minerals and it’s difficult to find a superior food in terms of protein per calorie.
